1. Why device enrolment is only one part of migration
A device can be enrolled in Microsoft Intune and still be poorly managed. If the migration only moves the management authority without addressing how policies, applications and support processes work together, operational friction simply shifts to the new platform.
In our Digital Workplace engineering work, we evaluate the entire operating model before migrating devices.
2. Configuration and policy mapping
Importing historical Group Policy Objects directly into Intune without review often carries legacy exceptions and conflicting settings into the cloud. A clean transition requires mapping what each setting achieves and rebuilding only necessary configurations using native Intune policies.
3. Application packaging and deployment readiness
Application delivery frequently causes the most delays during an endpoint transition. Every package needs reliable installation logic, accurate detection rules, clear dependency handling and clean uninstallation behaviour—and recurring packaging work can be streamlined through IT automation.
// Example: Application Package Readiness Checklist
01. Silent install & uninstall commands verified
02. Deterministic version detection rule (MSI product code / file version)
03. Prerequisite & supersedence rules documented
04. Tested in pilot ring before broad assignment
4. Identity, compliance and security considerations
Device compliance policies interact directly with identity and Conditional Access. If compliance evaluation criteria do not match the real device state during onboarding, users can be locked out of business applications when they first sign in.
5. Pilot testing, rollout and validation
Structured migrations move through representative pilot groups before wider rollout. Testing should verify both technical policy application and the real user experience across standard workflows and business applications.
6. Operational handover after migration
A migration is only complete when the internal team can operate and maintain the environment confidently. As outlined in How We Work, we document what was configured, why decisions were made and how ongoing lifecycle tasks should be handled.
